| Water (distilled) | to final volume |
Steps
- Stir NaCl into about 70% of the final volume of water until dissolved (takes time).
- Bring to the final volume.
- Autoclave and store at room temperature.
Good to know
- 5 M is close to saturation (≈ 6.1 M); crystals may form in the cold — warm to redissolve.
FAQ
The volume increases as it dissolves — is that normal?
Yes — which is why you dissolve first and then bring to the final volume.
This is a widely used standard composition. Amounts depend on the hydrate form and purity of your reagents — check the formula weight (FW) on the bottle and follow your institution's safety rules and the manufacturers' instructions.
