1 M MgSO₄ recipe
A magnesium stock for microbial media such as SOC and M9 and for enzyme reactions.
🧮 Volume calculator
| Component | Amount | Final concentration (1X) |
|---|---|---|
| MgSO₄·7H₂O (heptahydrate) | 24.65 g | 1 M |
| Water (distilled) | to final volume |
Steps
- Dissolve in about 80% of the final volume of water.
- Bring to the final volume with water.
- Autoclave (121 °C, 20 min) and store at room temperature.
Good to know
- With anhydrous MgSO₄ use 120.37 g/L.
- Add it to media after they have been autoclaved and cooled, to avoid precipitation.
FAQ
Are MgCl₂ and MgSO₄ interchangeable?
In most media only the magnesium matters, but for enzymes such as polymerases follow the salt the manual specifies.
This is a widely used standard composition. Amounts depend on the hydrate form and purity of your reagents — check the formula weight (FW) on the bottle and follow your institution's safety rules and the manufacturers' instructions.
