🧮 Volume calculator
| Component | Amount | Final concentration (1X) |
|---|---|---|
| Concentrated HCl (37%, ≈12.1 M) | 41.3 mL | 1 M |
| Water (distilled) | to final volume |
Steps
- Put about 80% of the final volume of water in a glass container first.
- In a fume hood, slowly add the concentrated HCl to the water (never the reverse).
- Bring to the final volume and store in a glass bottle at room temperature.
Good to know
- For 36% (≈11.6 M) HCl use 86 mL/L; for 32% (≈10.2 M) use 98 mL/L. Check the label.
⚠ Safety Concentrated HCl is corrosive with irritating fumes — use a fume hood, goggles and gloves.
FAQ
Why add acid to water?
Pouring water into acid can boil locally and spatter; adding acid to plenty of water spreads the heat.
This is a widely used standard composition. Amounts depend on the hydrate form and purity of your reagents — check the formula weight (FW) on the bottle and follow your institution's safety rules and the manufacturers' instructions.
